[art #904]. Limited Edition Print by Steve Dunn.
The 2006 season saw Valentino Rossi pushing the limits on the striking
Camel Yamaha YZR-M1 emblazoned with the distinctive yellow livery of his new
sponsor. The YZR-M1 with its 800cc inline-four engine provided a
well-balanced combination of power, agility, and precision, perfectly
suited for Rossi's riding style. Aboard this machine Rossi displayed
his characteristic brilliance seen in his aggressive cornering with his knee down and sometimes also his elbow dangerously close to the
asphalt as he leaned into each turn.
In that year Rossi's main challenge came from the increasing
competition but his Yamaha remained a formidable weapon in his hands.
The bike's refined chassis and advanced electronic systems allowed Rossi
to brake later, carry more speed into corners, and accelerate out with
remarkable control. Rossi's ability to exploit the Yamaha's strengths,
particularly on technical circuits like Jerez and Catalunya, was a sight
to behold.
Though the 2006 season didn't result in a title for Rossi, his
performances on the Camel Yamaha left an indelible mark on MotoGP. The
image of him laying the M1 almost horizontal through the corners, knee
and elbow grazing the ground, remains iconic and shows the lengths to
which Rossi pushed his machine in pursuit of victory.
The season culminated in an epic battle with Nicky Hayden. This time Hayden was the victor.
