Artwork detail

[art #426]. Limited Edition Print by Steve Dunn.

The Excelsior Manxman was a classic British motorcycle that exemplified the engineering prowess and racing spirit of the pre-war era. Introduced in 1935 by the Excelsior Motor Company, the Manxman was designed to compete in the prestigious Isle of Man TT, one of the most challenging and revered road races in the world. Powered by a 250cc, 350cc, or 500cc single-cylinder engine, the Manxman was known for its lightweight construction, reliability, and impressive performance. The engine, developed with input from renowned tuner Joe Craig, featured an overhead camshaft and was capable of producing very competitive power outputs for the time. The Manxman's sleek, streamlined design, combined with its advanced engineering, made it a formidable competitor on the track, where it earned several victories. The bike's name, "Manxman," paid homage to the Isle of Man, where it proved its mettle against the best machines of its time. Today, the Excelsior Manxman is a highly sought-after collector's item, revered for its racing heritage and its place in British motorcycle history. This particular machine, a 1939 350cc J12 model, was restored by Mr Nigel Wynne of VintageBike.co.uk fame.
